Deadlines for filing an appeal are generally very short, and a missed deadline can result in the dismissal of your appeal. Indeed, your trial attorney should discuss any recourse you have in the appellate court (whether by an appeal or by a writ petition) any time you suffer an adverse ruling that may prejudice your position in the case, even prior to a final judgment. Whenever you suffer from such a ruling or from an adverse final judgment, the attorney and client are well advised to seek appellate counsel promptly!
